This resource from the Knowledge, evidence and learning for development (K4D) helpdesk is a rapid review that sets out how poverty, gender and inclusion are impacted by business environment reforms in middle-income countries.
This review illustrates that while there is evidence of the indirect effects of such reforms on poverty, gender and inclusion, there is a lack of detailed evidence on the direct impacts in terms of their potential to remove institutional barriers which exclude formerly marginalised groups from business opportunities. The literature shows how the business environment affects women in business, and how women’s experiences of a given business environment can be different from those of men.
