Bringing work home: internet-mediated gig work and women’s employment

This policy brief examines the impact of flexible work arrangements on female labour force participation and gender norms in West Bengal, India. Through a field experiment with 1,670 households, the study finds that job flexibility significantly increases women's employment and shifts gender attitudes to become less traditional. It highlights how the ability to work from home and multitask with childcare influences labour supply decisions and explores why employers may be hesitant to offer job flexibility.
